Step 1, Copy all your Windows XP CD-ROM contents to hard drive
First, you need to find your Windows XP CD-ROM (any full version of Windows XP Home or Pro. Edition) and copy the contents of the CD to your hard drive’s partition on which you have enough space (may be 2 GB).
Suppose you have enough space on drive D, then create a folder on D drive and rename it to xp (d:\xp). Now copy all the files from CD-Rom to this folder.
Step 2, Get Windows XP Service Pack 2 and extract it
Download Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the Microsoft Web Site or copy it from Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD-ROM. The name of download version of Service Pack is WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU-.exe, while the CD-ROM version is xpsp2.exe. Now rename this as sp2.exe to make easy your task.
Now you need to extract this service pack. To do this, click on “Start” button on “Taskbar” and select “Run”. Type “cmd” and press “Enter”.
Now navigate to the directory, containing Service Pack using “Command Prompt”, type this sp2.exe –x:d:\sp2 and press “Enter”.
For example,
D:\
D:\sp2.exe –x:d:\sp2 [Enter]
Your computer will seem to pause for a bit, and then an Extracting Files dialog will come up and display the process. After completion a confirmation dialog will appear, press OK to continue.
Step 3, Combine XP with with Service Pack
Using “Command Prompt”, navigate to SP2 extraction directory (in this example d:\sp2) and give the following commands.
cd i386 [Enter]
cd update [Enter]
update –s:d:\xp [Enter]
After a short pause, XP SP2 Setup will combine, or slipstream, the SP2 files into the XP install. When it’s completed, you will see the confirmation dialog. Click on OK.
Step 4, Extracting boot image to make your new CD bootable
Before you simply burn the resulting file set to a CD, you need to make sure that you have a hidden file found on your Windows XP CD-ROM that will make your new CD bootable. You can’t garb this file with “My Computer”. You need a third party shareware tool called ISOBuster, which you can find in download session.
After you download and install ISOBuster, choose to use only the product’s fee functionality, unless you decide to purchase it, which wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Now, run the tool. On the left-side tree view, make sure you have selected the node named Bootable CD. You should see a file called Microsoft Corporation.img (or similar; it will be named something.img) in the right side of ISOBuster. Right-Click on it and choose Extract Microsoft Corporation.img. When ISOBuster pompts you, choose to download it to root of your D drive. Now close ISOBuster.
Step 5, Make a bootable XP SP2 CD
Start “My Computer” and make a note of the name of your Windows Xp CD(my CD happens to be named WXPVOL_EN because it’s a volume license version of XP Professional, but yours will likely be different). Then, eject the XP CD and place a burnable CD (CD-R or CD-RW) in your CD Burner, and dismiss any autorun dialog box XP might display.
Now, you’re ready to burn your new, bootable Windows XP SP2 CD. How you do this will depend on the CD writing software you use. Here we are making a bootable XP SP2 CD with Nero Burning Rom 6.
First, start Nero Burning ROM and chose CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation’s Boot page. Then, under “Source of boot image data,” choose “Image file” and select D:\Microsoft Corporation.img by clicking the Browse button. Then, select the option titled “Enabled expert settings (for advanced users only)” and change “Kind of emulation” to No Emulation, and change “Number of loaded sectors” to 4. The “Load segment of sectors” option should remain at its default value of 07C0. When this step is completed, the Nero Burning ROM application should resemble all this.
Now, select the “Label” page in Nero Burning ROM. Under “Volume Label, ISO 9660” enter the name of your CD (e.g. WXPVOL_IN). Now click on “New” button. The New Compilation dialog disappears and the main window of Nero Burning ROM is available. On the right side of the application, in the File Browser area, navigate to D:\XP. Then, select all of the files inside of that directory and copy them over the new CD.
Now you’re ready to burn the CD. Click Burn icon in the toolbar, or choose Recorder and then Burn Compilation, and then click the Burn button.
